Anger as Yobe APC Members Reject Lawan Despite Strange Supreme Court Judgment

Bashir Machina: Angry Yobe APC Members React over Lawan Despite Strange Supreme Court Judgment

Members of the All Progressive Congress APC in Yobe State who are supporters of the Bashir Machina for Senate campaign group, have vowed to reject the candidature of Ahmad Lawan, the Senate President, in the forthcoming February 25 elections.

One of the coordinators, Mohammed Gaskanta, said the group will not support Lawan in the National Assembly election for Yobe North Senatorial District despite a latest ruling of the Supreme Court nullifying the candidacy of Machina.

He insisted that despite the ruling, his loyalty to Mr Machina remained unshaken.

On Monday, the Supreme Court had strangely dismissed the rulings of the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal which stated that Mr Machina was the authentic candidate of the party for the district. The court ruled that Mr Lawan was the authentic candidate of the party for the district.

In a split judgment of three to two, the court allowed the appeal filed by the APC against Bashir Machina’s candidature.

There has been an ongoing controversy over the APC Yobe North Senatorial ticket.

Machina, at a primary election organised by the party in May 2022 won unopposed. The senate president did not participate in the primary election.

At the time the exercise was later held, Lawan was pursuing his presidential ambition but lost to former Lagos State governor, Bola Tinubu.

Another primary was later held which produced Lawan as winner. The party then submitted name of the senate president to the commission.

THECONSCIENCEng reports that the Supreme Court judgment has been roundly criticised by many including United States based Professor, Farooq Kperogi for violating the will of the electorates.
