57 Legal Practitioners Make Latest SAN List

THECONSCIENCE NG reports that the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) has approved the elevation of 57 distinguished legal practitioners to the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).

The decision was reached during the LPPC’s 169th plenary session held today in Abuja, under the chairmanship of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun.

Of the 57 newly appointed SANs, 56 were elevated in the advocates’ category, while one appointment was made in the academic category.

This year, only two female legal practitioners were conferred with the rank. They are Mrs. Oyinkan Badejo-Okusanya, Chairperson of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) 2024 Annual General Conference Planning Committee, and Mrs. Chinyere Ekene Moneme.

Notable names among the appointees include:

Mr. Ikechukwu Uwanna, Attorney General of Abia State and former Chairman of the NBA Lagos Branch,

Mr. Labaran Magaji, former Attorney General of Nasarawa State and current Secretary to the State Government,

Mr. Oluwole Jimi-Bada, Attorney General of Osun State.

The lone academic appointee for this year is Professor Chima Ubanyionwu.

According to the LPPC, the newly appointed SANs will be formally sworn in on Monday, September 29, 2025, by Chief Justice Kekere-Ekun.

In a statement issued after the plenary, the Committee reiterated the significance of the SAN rank, stating:

“The rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria is conferred as a mark of professional excellence upon legal practitioners who have demonstrated exceptional distinction either as advocates in the courts or as academics contributing significantly to the development of legal scholarship.”

The Committee also revealed that three petitions were received and reviewed during the session. However, each was found to be without merit and was subsequently dismissed.

In line with the directives of the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (BOSAN), all SAN-designates are required to attend and complete the mandatory Pre-Swearing-In Induction Programme.
