CHSR Urges IGP to Delist Adeyinka From Wanted List, Unfreeze Account

THECONSCIENCE NG reports that the Centre for Human and Socio-economic Rights (CHSR) has called on the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, to urgently, in the interest of fair hearing and justice, delist Chief Mrs Dorcas Adeyinka, the founder and CEO of the Dorcas Adeyinka Empowerment Foundation, from its wanted list and also unfreeze her account.

The rights group made the call in Lagos on Monday at a media briefing.

CHSR President, Comrade Alex Omotehinse, urged the police authorities to promptly address the injustice meted out to Adeyinka who has was detained for 21 days and being harassed unjustly despite her kind assistance and support for vulnerable and impoverished Nigerians.

Adeyinka’s ordeal was in relations to the death of one of her beneficiaries.

Omotehinse stated, “CHSR, as a reputable organisation, humbly appeals to the IGP’s office and the person to, as a matter of urgency, in the interest of fair hearing and justice, delist Mrs Dorcas Adeyinka from the wanted list and also unfreeze her account.”

The activist lamented how Adeyinka endured a harrowing experience in the hands of the Nigerian Police, including prolonged detention and harassment, and called for an end to such abuses.

He recounted that during a visit to the police authorities in Abuja, it was revealed that Adeyinka’s ordeal was reportedly instigated by the office of the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, rather than the investigation team led by DCP Elema.

He elaborated: “Following a careful review of her complaint letter and our visit to the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja to meet the IGP monitoring team in charge of the case, we were informed by the team leader, DCP Elema, that the team had concluded their investigation and submitted its report to the appropriate quarters, revealing that it was the office of the FPPRO that declared Dorcas wanted, which was not part of their report.”

“Chief Mrs Dorcas Adeyinka, a Nigerian-born British citizen and the Chief Executive Officer of the Dorcas Adeyinka Empowerment Foundation—a foundation of hope for thousands of Nigerian citizens—was subsequently detained for 21 days in Abuja following her appearance.”

“It took the efforts of the detainee’s legal team to secure her release by filing for the enforcement of her fundamental human rights in the Abuja High Court, pending the outcome of the autopsy of the deceased.”

“The autopsy report exonerated Mrs Dorcas Adeyinka, indicating that the cause of death was tuberculosis. The report vindicated Dorcas, corroborating her earlier assertion that she had no knowledge of the deceased’s death but merely provided assistance to the family by taking them off the street. In a more just environment, Dorcas Adeyinka’s name should have been removed from the wanted list the moment she entered police custody, and she should have been discharged and acquitted of all charges, with compensation for the damage to her name and character. Instead, the police warned and threatened her against going public after the autopsy report.”

“Surprisingly, Chief Mrs Dorcas Adeyinka alleged that, to this day, the FPPRO, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, has yet to remove her name from the wanted list, with her opponents continuing to exploit it against her on social media, while her account remains frozen by the Nigerian Police Force. We have reliable information that Dorcas Adeyinka’s legal team has filed a petition against ACP Muyiwa Adejobi and one officer, Tope Saint Williams, before the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, with a letter dated Friday, 9th May 2025.”

The Centre for Human and Socio-economic Rights (CHSR) is a public good-oriented non-governmental organisation (NGO) registered as a corporate body to defend, sustain, and promote the culture and fundamental human and socio-economic rights of citizens and residents in any part of Nigeria as guaranteed by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
