The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, has criticized the actions of her predecessor, Mudashiru Obasa, who appeared at the Assembly on Thursday, insisting that he was still the Speaker.
Meranda made the comments to journalists on Friday at the Lagos State High Court, where Obasa had filed an application challenging his removal.
“To me, that was just a show of shame because in our role, we rely on numbers to form a quorum,” Meranda said, referring to Obasa’s appearance at the Assembly the previous day. “If you’re sitting with only three or four members, you’re essentially putting on a performance.”
The Lagos Assembly crisis took a new turn on Thursday when Obasa, representing Agege 1 Constituency, showed up at the Assembly complex weeks after his colleagues had elected Mojisola Meranda as his successor.
Accompanied by a team of heavily armed security officers, Obasa entered the Assembly chambers, where he had not been seen publicly since his removal on January 13, 2025.
Meranda, his former deputy, was elected as the new Speaker, making history as the first female to lead the legislative body in Lagos State.
However, Obasa has insisted that his removal was unconstitutional and did not follow proper procedures.
“I’ve always said that I have never been removed from office. I’m not opposed to any removal, but it must follow the rules of the House,” Obasa stated after returning to the Assembly. “If you’re going to remove someone, it must be done in line with the Constitution.”
