Getting university admission is the dream of many a secondary school graduate irrespective of the persons academic inclination.
However, this has remained a herculean task as UTME often constitutes almost an unsurmountable barrier to a lot of admission seekers. Therefore, some of these admission seekers ask questions like:
Is there a substitute for UTME?
Is it possible to get admission into the university without UTME?
Is it possible to get into 200 level in the university without going through 100 level?
In Economics, substitute goods are defined as two alternative goods that could be used for the same purpose. In this context, the purpose is getting university admission.
Although the popular rout is to go through UTME yet smart candidates can also go through Direct Entry (DE). This means that such candidates will get admission without UTME. So DE becomes the substitute for UTME. However, it is not just a substitute but it also gives the candidates opportunity of 200 level admission.
1. It saves time because it affords you the chance of DE while you spend nine months on the program.
2. Its result does not expire. Thus you can use it years after you have passed it unlike UTME, which is valid for just only a year.
3. It increases your chances of gaining admission.
4. It has a well-defined syllabus which prepares you adequately for the academic rigours of the university.
5. IJMB has Mathematics & English Language O’level for anyone with deficiency in those two subjects.
IJMB means Interim Joint Matriculation Board (moderated by ABU, Zaria). It is an A/Level program that gets you into 200 level after completing it successfully. IJMB examination usually comes up every February, and you can use it to get admission into 200level.
JUPEB means Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (moderated by UNILAG). It is also an A/Level program that gets you into 200 level after completing it successfully. JUPB examination usually comes up every June, and you can use it to get admission into 200level.
The next thing to do after registering for IJMB/JUPEB is to obtain DE, fill the university of your choice and prepare for your IJMB/JUPEB exam so you can get admission into 200level.
“Therefore, candidates who failed UTME and those who did not even enroll for UTME should go for this better alternative to UTME” a lecturer at the Kwara State Polytechnic and education consultant has said.
