An end-of-year celebration organized by Evangelist Silekunola Naomi Ogunwusi, the former wife of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, turned tragic on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, in Ibadan.
Reports indicate that at least one child has died, while many others were injured during a stampede at the event.
The gathering, which was held at the Islamic High School in the Bashorun area of Ibadan, attracted a massive crowd, with attendees arriving from neighboring towns. Some attendees reportedly camped overnight at the venue, responding to publicity from a popular Ibadan-based radio station.
Eyewitnesses told the BBC that the stampede began shortly after the program started, as the overwhelming crowd struggled for space. Conflicting reports suggest that the death toll may be higher, with some claiming four children lost their lives. However, the BBC has not independently verified this
A source from the Oyo State Police Command, who requested anonymity, confirmed to reporters that three children had died, and many others were hospitalized.
The program, organized under Olori Naomi‘s charity organization, Women in Need of Guidance and Support (WINGS), was immediately postponed following the incident. As of now, the organizers have not released an official statement.
Evangelist Naomi, born Naomi Oluwaseyi in Akure, Ondo State, in 1993, rose to national prominence after marrying the Ooni of Ife in 2018. The union produced a son, Tadenikawo, in 2020. Naomi, a model, prophetess, and founder of the inter-denominational ministry En-Heralds, has been known for her annual philanthropic activities.
In December 2021, she announced her separation from the Ooni, stating her decision to step away from the marriage on social media. Despite stepping down as Queen of Ife, Naomi has continued her ministry and charity work, including the now-tragic event in Ibadan.
As investigations continue into the incident, the tragedy involves the risks associated with managing large crowds at public events, particularly those involving children.
