Popular singer Timi Dakolo, has reacted to recent criticism by Apostle Femi Lazarus about gospel singers who charge for ministrations.
Femi Lazarus, lead pastor of Light Nation Church, openly expressed disapproval of gospel musicians who demand hefty sums to perform at church events.
He emphasised that gospel singers should not view worship as a commercial venture but trust in God’s provision rather than engaging in financial negotiations for their services.
His remarks have sparked renewed debate within the Nigerian Christian community, with many agreeing that gospel music should remain focused on ministry rather than financial profit.
In a lengthy social media post, Dakolo reacted to Lazarus’ comments, questioning the cleric’s definition of a gospel artist versus a performer.
Dakolo pointed out that Lazarus charges for his own school of ministry, where he teaches and preaches about Jesus.
He argued that, according to Apostle Lazarus’ own definition, charging fees for ministry work excludes preachers from being recognised as true ministers of the gospel.
He wrote: “All this was said in love and with respect sir. I am not a gospel artist but a Christian raised in church.
“Let’s not shift the goal post. By your definition, if anyone charges to minister, they are not Gospel artist, they performers.
“And by that definition, if any preacher charges to teach and minister, they are merchants of hope and motivational speakers and performers too.
“Sir, you are charging as low as 150 dollars per person for your school of ministry. Teaching and preaching Jesus. Probably having as much as 1000 students . Let’s do the maths. You even have premium and standard for God house?
“Are you not selling the Gift and revelation freely given to you? Again let’s not keep shifting the goal post.
“Such hypocrisy, The school of ministry has expenses and Music creation doesn’t. Running cost important, production / promotion cost unimportant. Una well done.
“Most of you don’t know how much a producer charges, then the marketing, the promotion. The amount of hours it takes to finish a song. Keep shifting the goal post guys.”
