Suleiman Garba Bulkwang, a respected director at the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), now faces serious allegations that could alter the course of his life and career.
Once at the helm of human resources management at the agency, Bulkwang is accused of involvement in a fraudulent scheme amounting to a staggering N223 million.
His life, filled with professional milestones, now stands in sharp contrast to the charges brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
This was disclosed in a statement by the EFCC on its official x page.
The case centers around five counts of fraud and money laundering. According to the EFCC, Bulkwang orchestrated the diversion of public funds through a network of shell companies and consultants.
A key accusation claims that Bulkwang directed Umaefulem Donatus Chibueze, the head of two companies, to transfer over N138 million from payments made to REA.
This transaction, the EFCC states, was tied to unlawful activities, tarnishing his professional reputation and leading to legal battles.
The situation took another turn when it was revealed that N45 million was allegedly laundered through multiple companies connected to Bulkwang. With his future uncertain, he pleaded “not guilty” to all charges in court, where his legal team was notably absent.
The prosecution counsel, Ekele Iheanacho, SAN, is determined to see the case through, requesting his continued remand as the trial process unfolds.
Justice Joyce Abdulmalik granted the request and adjourned the case to February 3, 2024, for the hearing of the defendant’s bail application.
Meanwhile, Bulkwang was ordered to be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Center.
