Lucky Aiyedatiwa has been inaugurated as the Governor of Ondo State, marking the beginning of his first full four-year term. He initially assumed office following the passing of former Governor Rotimi Akeredolu in 2023.
The swearing-in ceremony took place on Monday in Akure, the Ondo State capital, attended by top government officials, traditional rulers, party leaders, and supporters.
Aiyedatiwa took the oath of office at approximately 12:59 p.m., shortly after his deputy, Olayide Adelami, was sworn in. The Chief Judge of Ondo State, Justice A.O. Odusola, administered the oath, officially confirming Aiyedatiwa’s position as the state’s executive leader.
In his inaugural address, Aiyedatiwa expressed gratitude to the people of Ondo State for their trust and reaffirmed his commitment to delivering on his campaign promises. He outlined his administration’s key priorities, including infrastructural development, economic growth, job creation, and enhanced security across the state.
Aiyedatiwa’s victory in the governorship election under the All Progressives Congress (APC) further cements the party’s dominance in Ondo State. His administration is expected to continue implementing APC’s policies while tackling pressing socio-economic challenges.
The event was graced by APC’s national chairman, several governors, and party leaders, who pledged their support for Aiyedatiwa’s administration.
Despite his electoral success, Aiyedatiwa faces numerous governance challenges, including addressing infrastructural deficits, revitalizing the state’s economy, and ensuring political stability. Additionally, concerns over workers’ welfare and security remain significant issues that demand urgent attention.
Aiyedatiwa officially assumed office as Governor of Ondo State on December 27, 2023, following Akeredolu’s demise. In a strategic move to reposition his administration, he dissolved the State Executive Council on January 24, 2024. This decision came after internal conflicts had divided the cabinet due to tensions between Aiyedatiwa and Akeredolu before the latter’s passing.
Aiyedatiwa emerged victorious in the November 16, 2024, governorship election, defeating his main opponent, Hon. Agboola Ajayi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared him the winner after he secured an unprecedented victory in all 18 local government areas of the state.
Aiyedatiwa won with over 366,000 votes, while his closest rival, Agboola Ajayi, garnered 117,000 votes.
He becomes Ondo State’s 5th democratically elected governor since its creation in 1976.
